The fishing on the Chetek chain hit sudden cold front lull in fishing an it is only till the fish adjust to the cooler night air moving in an as you know cooling everything down. The fish tend to stay in the suspend mode in the thermo cline in the lakes until the weather starts to stabilize which it is doing. By this weekend or even today they should start to be more active and feeding. They have to eat sooner or later.
The walleye's should start to move more into shallow hard bottom area's more for there feeding at night time. Try trolling some of these areas with shallow running crank baits or rapalas or husky jerks a shad rap's in the early evening hours or early morning hours. You can also try fishing these same area's with live bait rig’s such as lindy rig’s or slip bobber rig’s with night crawler's, minnow's or leaches where you can find them in the area.
The Northern pike action will really turn on here as the northern pike put on there feed bag's before the waters turn to cold an fatten up for winter like the bears do in the fall. Fish the flat areas also in the late afternoon times the water is warmer in the afternoon after the air has warmed through the day with the sun beating on it. You can try fishing with any shallow running minnow looking bait's, spinner bait's also seem to work well dare devil's worked under the surface along the weed edge's. Bobber fishermen have been having some real good success with some bigger pike.
Bass fishermen will have to fish more slowly at this time of the year until the Bass adjust to the colder temperatures an changing water temp's. Try fishing where the water's warm up quicker through the morning hours. Westerly shore lines or coves the sun rises in the east and shines to the west in the mornings. Another way of possibly having some good action is with reaction lures or baits swim through the schools of bass suspending in the thermo-cline areas off the drops.
Pan fishing also slowed down trough this last cold front also. The crappie action should start to pick back up out in the deeper water before the bluegills adjust to the cooler waters, only because crappies spend more time in the thermo cline area's through the hot summer day's. Try vertical jigging for them of the edge of the boat with your favorite crappie jigs. You may run into some nice jumbo perch with this method of fishing or an occasional walleye also.
Bluegills will be moving through many different stages as the water temp's get cooler an cooler. They will be found in the shallow's with wood an weed's at times an then also out in deeper waters at times which could be 8-13 feet of water. Waxies seem to work well as the temperatures change. But garden a red worm's can work just as well dragged on the bottom or fished suspended under a bobber.
Please remember through the labor day weekend to be courteous to other boater's an please watch the no wake area's where you see boater's pulling kid’s on tube's in unsafe congested travel area's instead of taking the time to get these children in the boat where they are safe in the boat or on the pontoon's they are driving. Please take the time to think before you have an accident instead of after the accident happens of what you could have down to prevent it. Thank you from Steve at Up-der north guide service.
